Nurse Jackie title sequence
by Critical Commons ManagerThe title sequence of Nurse Jackie sets up the main character's narrative contradictions
The opening title sequence of the Showtime medical drama Nurse Jackie reveals the show's internal and character contradictions that contribute to its primary narrative tensions. The main character, played by Edie Falco is a no-nonsense ER nurse in New York City, who is having an affair with a co-worker, while managing to be a loving mother of two young daughters, a jealous spouse to a nice-guy husband and a drug addict dependent on pain killers. The iconography of the show's opening highlights Jackie's drug use, while hinting at her character's complexity through the juxtaposition of a Jesus necklace and a stethoscope draped around her neck. Even if the show's titles lean toward the sensational, it is rare enough to have a female character on TV who can be both likable and unfaithful or, even more remarkably, a caring mother who is also a sexually voracious drug addict.
