Austin Powers parodies the fantasy vs. reality of videophone technology
Text Commentary:
Three generations of videophone technology are brilliantly parodied in this montage of scenes from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, highlighting the ways in which cultural fantasies of technology often far exceed the real capabilities of existing technologies. Juxtaposing the 1960s fantasy of a high-resolution, real-time video car phone with the jerky, synch-challenged reality of internet video of the late 1990s reveals this disparity with particular clarity, while the final sequence depicts a late 1990s fantasy of video-enabled mobile devices that is still not realized more than a decade later.
