Medium reflexivity in animation

by ccManager
Commentary summary:
Chuck Jones' self-reflexive animation highlights the properties of cinema and the animation frame

Text Commentary:

This animated short by Chuck Jones uses medium reflexivity and diegetic shifts to humorous effect, simulating the effect of a cartoon character who struggles with a tyrannical animator for control of the screen, echoing the spatial dislocation dream sequence from Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr. Each component of the animated film is dismantled in sequence, including the use of color, sound, frame lines, sound effects and synchronization, but in the end, the coherence of the animation space is recontained through a pull-back to reveal Bugs Bunny as the sadistic animator.
