In its desperation to render "code" visible to cinematic audiences, The Matrix coined a visual vocabulary for computer graphics that suggests both early CRT monitors and a vague and pointless Orientalism seen in the indiscriminate mashing up of Roman alphanumeric characters with the Japanese syllabary, Katakana.
