Soon after the end of World War II, the cold war began and a new strain of paranoia infected the American psyche.  By the time this film was released, America’s former allies but newly constituted enemies, the Russians, had developed nuclear weapons.  Now, the prospect of another global conflict included the very real possibility of the total destruction of the human species.  This film suggested that nothing short of the intervention of God would be required to prevent humanity from engineering its own destruction.
