Although Haley Joel Osment was clearly directed to act "like a robot" throughout much of the film, this is perhaps the only moment that approximates the creepiness of the uncanny valley when he turns himself into the speaker for a cordless phone and begins talking in the voice of the caller. Rather than endearing himself to his adoptive mother, this gesture instead underscores his mechanical nature and exacerbates the emotional distance between them.
