Videophones and technological remediation
by ccManagerCommentary summary:
Phone booths are remediated for the space age in 2001
Text Commentary:
In this narratively superfluous scene, which includes unlikely product placement from Bell Telephone and Howard Johnson's, the banality of video telephony unfolds in real time. The remediation of communication technology in the cinematic imaginary preserves the idea of phone booths, keypads and per-call charges decades before AT&T promised that "You Will" one day tuck your baby in from a phone booth.
